The Brief

Chippenham BID (Business Improvement District) commissioned us to produce a video that they could use to promote the town and its range of retail offerings over the festive period. The video was to be filmed on two separate occasions so that we could deliver a preliminary edit that could be used to promote the town earlier in the season and one that was delivered closer to Christmas that could incorporate the light switch-on.


The main task we faced was to create a Christmas ambience back in mid-October when most retail stores hadn’t even begun to dress their shops or restaurants. We knew we could create a winter atmosphere on exterior shots in post-production but we had to carefully plan the shot list (mood, decoration, etc.) of the interiors with each business owner. In addition to the visuals we felt it was important that the soundtrack that we edited to was created by a local musician. We approached a popular, local songwriter called Jarid Clark who, inspired by the classic Chris Rea song, “Driving Home for Christmas,” wrote a bespoke track for the video that conveyed a sense of returning to his hometown for the Christmas period.


The first trailer went live very shortly after it was delivered to the client, generating an amazing 20,000 views on Vimeo in a matter of days. Local and County media also picked up on its success, comparing it favourably to commercials such as John Lewis and Sainsbury’s.
